film synopsis
Playwright David Harrower and director Benedict Andrews have made an explosively intense adaptation of Harrower's Tony-winning play about pedophilia, Blackbird. Una was 13 and Ray was close to 40 when their relationship began. She believed it was love. They were about to run away together when Ray was arrested, convicted and sent to prison for having sex with a minor. Now, 15 years later, the damaged Una (Rooney Mara), sees a photo of Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) in the paper and sets out to confront him. He's changed his name, married and created a new life as a manager in a manufacturing plant. Una's life has been defined by the affair. She's consumed with rage, but her anger is mixed with the hurt of an abandoned lover. What does she want from him? Revenge, or something more twisted? Sure to provoke controversy, Una is not an easy film to watch, but it's acted with such fierce conviction and filmed with such masterly intensity that you can't turn away.
"Ferociously good... simmers with the combustible suspense of a Tarantino movie." David Ehrlich, Indiewire
