Belgium’s Oscar® submission is a wintery crime drama about two brothers with bad blood and a trust deficit between them. A downbeat first half quickens into a brutal, unnerving climax with an extra helping of “crazy” on the side.

film synopsis

This wintery crime drama roots suspense and violence in character and family dynamics. After a failed robbery, Dave (Jeroen Perceval) gets away, while his sociopath brother Kenny (Kevin Janssens) takes the rap. Cut to four years later. Kenny gets out of prison eager to pick up where they left off, but Dave has straightened up his act, quit drugs and booze, and, worst of all, he's engaged to Sylvie (Veerle Baetens), Kenny's girl. Rightfully wary of breaking the news to his brother, Dave stalls for time and sets Kenny up with a legitimate job, but he's only delaying the inevitable...

After this menacing, downbeat setup, the action switches from the city to the backwoods and Robin Pront's directorial debut descends-or ascends, if you prefer-into murder and mayhem, with an extra helping of "crazy" on the side. An expertly ambivalent supporting performance from Jan Bivoets (Borgman) as a former cellmate whom Kenny turns to in time of trouble brings everything to a head.
