film synopsis

This vibrant, touching debut feature from director María José Cuevas is a fascinating, at times heartbreaking look into the lives of five legendary Mexican vedettes, the multi-talented showgirls of the 1970s and '80s who transcended the nightclub stage to become full-fledged, pop culture sensations.

There's Lyn May, whose exotic beauty made her a regular in the low-budget Cine de Ficheras films, now struggling to maintain her allure through drastic cosmetic surgery; classically-trained violinist Olga Breeskin, whose battle with drugs and alcohol led to a new path as a born-again preacher; the still glamorous Rossy Mendoza; and Wanda Seux, whose ongoing battle with cancer gives the film its most raw, shocking moments.

Cuevas takes an unflinching look at the lives of these aging divas in a media culture obsessed with youth. Using delightful archival clips from variety shows and sexicomedias of the era, with more recent footage shot over eight years, Beauties of the Night is a fresh, fun and moving tribute to a bygone era in entertainment and the unforgettable women who brought it to life.
