Standing at a crossroads between his conservative family back on a religious kibbutz in Israel and his life as an openly gay man in London, Saar Maoz, now HIV-positive, faces the decision of a lifetime: “Should I go home again?” Winner: Audience Award, Panorama, Berlin; Krakow.

film synopsis

Saar Moaz has a decision to make. A really big decision: stay in London, where he has been living freely the past 18 years as a gay man-with friends, a job and a spot in the London Gay Men's Chorus-or go back to his estranged conservative family on a religious kibbutz in Israel? Now HIV-positive, he misses home and wants to reconnect, but it's not that easy. As a young man, he was kicked off the kibbutz for defying its rules, and his family rejected him.

When Moaz visits home, he finds a family that an Israeli Norman Lear might have conjured. Dad is supremely macho (a drill instructor!), Mom weeps for her son and a brother expresses enough anti-gay prejudice to make a Bible Belt conservative blush. But, what emerges through some tense and often quite funny scenes, is a family trying to understand and love each other, while still standing their ground. Leavening Moaz's dilemma, is lovely, rejuvenating music performed by the London Gay Men's Chorus.

Winner: Audience Awards, Berlin Panorama and Krakow
