film synopsis
The deeply observant Orthodox 32-year-old Michal (Noa Koller) has always been desperate to marry, and finally she's met a man, gotten engaged and rented the hall for her wedding. The invitations are out. But on the eve of the great event, her fiancé confesses he doesn't love her and the wedding is called off. Undeterred, Michal refuses to cancel her wedding plans. She firmly believes that God will provide a husband by the eighth day of Hanukkah.
With the clock ticking and matchmakers on the case, Michal begins her quixotic search for the perfect mate, with results both hilarious, tantalizing and uncanny. In her first film, the acclaimed Fill the Void, the American-born Israeli Rama Bursthein, gave us a dramatic study of marriage in the Hasidic community; here she adopts a looser style, giving us something new: an ultra-Orthodox romantic comedy. And in Noa Koller she's discovered a wonderfully expressive comedienne who makes the quirky, determined, insecure Michal an unforgettable and unique screen hero. Is she deluded, or will her faith be rewarded?
Winner: Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Israeli Academy Awards
