When a Nobel Prize-winning author returns to the small town in Argentina where he grew up (and that inspired much of his fiction), it sets off a whirlwind of excitement, resentment and desire. Razor sharp and very funny. Winner: Best Actor, Venice.

film synopsis

With nothing less than a Nobel Prize for Literature under his belt, acclaimed Barcelona-based author Daniel Mantovani (Oscar Martínez, Paulina; Wild Tales) finds himself in a deep artistic and existential rut, fearful that canonization really means that his creative fire has burned out. But when a curious offer appears, to accept the "Distinguished Citizen" award from the small Argentinian backwater of Salas, Mantovani's birthplace and the setting for much of his fiction, the writer senses a chance to reconnect with his roots and maybe even find inspiration in a town he hasn't stepped foot in for over 40 years.

The arrival of this beloved prodigal son sparks off a whirlwind of high expectations and petty jealousies, excitement and resentment, as well as encounters with Daniel's childhood love Irene (Andrea Frigerio), her boorish husband Antonio (Dady Brieva) and sexy groupie Julia (Belén Chavanne). Razor sharp and very funny, this is a wry and engaging comedy on celebrity, creativity and that forbidden place called home.

Winner: Best Actor, Venice
