film synopsis
This gripping psychological drama, co-written by director Zrinko Ogresta and multi-talented playwright/screenwriter/composer Mate Matisic, brings a new twist to the subject of postwar ex-Yugoslavia. The action is seen through the eyes of a middle-aged Zagreb nurse whose war criminal husband contacts her out of the blue more than 20 years after he left the family.
Is forgiveness possible? And is it ever possible to escape one's past? These questions provide the film's underlying themes as Vesna, a middle-aged woman more or less on autopilot, is shocked into thoughts and feelings she had long repressed.
Ogresta's smart directing choices and refined visual style create a sense of anxiety that supports this emotionally complex, tautly assembled and powerfully performed film. The conclusion brings a twist that few will see coming. Co-producer/lead actor Lazar Ristovski also stars in Serbia's Oscar® submission, Train Driver's Diary.
"Precise and concise... a complex parable about love and grief, cruelty and forgiveness." The Hollywood Reporter
