film synopsis
Layla is a fiery, opinionated, 18-year-old Dutch-Moroccan girl living in Amsterdam who becomes disillusioned by daily brushes with casual racism. Making matters worse, her family seems to be more than happy to assimilate into Dutch culture and give up their values. Frustrated, she turns to Islam, but her faith becomes increasingly radical. She falls for a devout Jihadist and heads to the Middle East, only to discover that the new life she has pledged to isn't so welcoming to her gender. Director Mijke de Jong navigates some very difficult territory here with great tact and humanity, finding universal themes of identity and family in a specific and all-too relevant story.
"Mijke de Jong's exploration of the issues surrounding radicalization and identity [is] distinguished by its intelligent approach to complex matters, the polished visuals of cinematographer Danny Elsen and a knockout central performance from newcomer Nora el Koussour." Allan Hunter, Screen
