• Kiki, Love to Love

    Directed by Paco León
Spain | 102 minutes | World Cinema Now

Phew! Is it hot in here? Five stories about sex, fetishism and perversity keep this sharp, bawdy Spanish comedy clicking. Almodóvar would be proud, not only of its subversive daring, but its inclusive understanding.

film synopsis

Stuck in the doldrums of a tired sexual routine, Ana (Katz) and Paco (writer/director León) have their sleepy marriage slapped awake by a curious invitation from their sexy friend Belén (Cuesta). Beautiful young couple Álex (García) and Natalia (Molina) face an impasse over the lingering effects of Natalia's recent mugging... which made her very, very hot. Middle-aged José Luis finds an unusual release in his increasingly bitter relationship with Paloma, while Maria Candelaria discovers just how arousing her husband Antonio can be while at his most vulnerable in this sharp, bawdy Spanish hit.

Inspired by (but very different from) the Australian comedy The Little Death, this homegrown sensation knocked Batman vs Superman off the top at the Spanish box office. Like early Almodóvar in its no-holds-barred approach to love, sex and the games we play to get both, Kiki, Love to Love's five stories reflect a universal longing for connection, a gentle reminder that in one way or another each of us is an outsider longing to be let in.

"Sexy, daring, transgressive, brightly colored and often very funny." Jonathan Holland, The Hollywood Reporter
