A missing person inquiry brings indigenous detective Jay Swan to a frontier town. What seems like a simple investigation opens a web of crime and corruption. This follow up to Mystery Road is another stylish and political neo-noir.

film synopsis

Looking considerably the worse for wear, taciturn aboriginal detective Jay Swan of Mystery Road (PSIFF 2014) starts a new case in another dusty outback burg in this accomplished thriller/Western. Jay is an outsider who is no longer a part of the indigenous community, or the uncaring white establishment he works for, and he seems to be spiraling out of control after a personal tragedy.

Jay is hunting for a missing Chinese woman, the first piece in what looks like a major human trafficking case, but his state of mind forces him to rely on a cocky, young police officer for help in battling injustice, racism and corruption.

In addition to writing and directing, multi-hyphenate Sen also edited, photographed and scored the film.

"Sen's unique accomplishment with these two films, unequalled in contemporary Aussie cinema, is his daringly idealistic intention and crystal clear success at balancing the demands of contemporary genre filmmaking with, in this case, the ongoing hot-button issues of Aboriginal relations (Sen is himself of mixed Indigenous/European heritage), human trafficking, the human greed behind corporate corruption and cultural destruction." Eddie Cockrell, Variety
