In this feel-good drama set in 1971, housewife and mother Nora campaigns for women’s suffrage in her Alpine village. Although patriarchal constraints try to stifle the siren call of sexual liberation, Nora won’t give up on emancipation. Winner: Best Feature, Best Actress, Tribeca

film synopsis

Did you know that women were denied the right to vote in Switzerland until 1971? In this fact-based comic drama, Nora (Marie Leuenberger of 2010 PSIFF audience favorite Will You Marry Us?) is a demure and conscientious housewife in a quiet Alpine village, raising two young boys and waiting hand and foot on her grumpy father-in-law. She’d love to take a job outside the home, but her handsome hubby won’t hear of it. Stymied by the men in her life, she finds fulfillment and confidence in the gathering movement for women’s suffrage and equality. Nora’s liberated comrades open her up to new worlds and new experiences (both mental and physical), but questioning the norms in one’s town or one’s marriage will inevitably be met with resistance. Still, Nora finds the courage to stand up to outdated sexist attitudes and ultimately convinces her fellow villagers to do so too in this inspirational crowd-pleaser.

Winner: Best Feature, Best Actress, Tribeca; Audience Award, Traverse City
