film synopsis
Cowriter/director Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead; The Drop) infuses his propensity for gritty crime tales with steamy romance in this dramatic arthouse thriller following two star-crossed lovers on the fast track to heartbreak.
When the dashing Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone) first meets the racecar-driver Bibi (Adèle Exarchopoulos, Blue is the Warmest Color), he is immediately enamored and forthright about his intentions to woo her. Yet the charming suitor wisely opts to not divulge his career choice as an international high-end thief, because though Bibi would likely overlook that red flag, her business-minded family would hit the brakes. Their irresistible chemistry turns to talk of wedding bells, but Gigi has committed to one last job with his brothers-in-crime, and the future holds unforeseen obstacles to a life together.
Roskam’s romantic caper reveals itself to be an intriguing and heartbreaking study of how far these two thrill-seekers will go for true love.
