film synopsis
Adam and Lamia are a Christian Arab couple from Nazareth, part of a rapidly shrinking minority in the Holy Land. He’s a failed entrepreneur (among his many harebrained inventions is novelty toilet paper, a product that never took off, so he is forced to use it at home) and she’s an empowered woman who makes men wince and cross their legs when she talks feminism on television. When Lamia becomes pregnant and Adam’s endearing father falls ill, Adam decides to provide for his family by entering the biggest local business—religion. He begins to sell specially bottled Holy Air from the peak of Mount Precipice to tourists congregating for the Pope’s visit.
Director, screenwriter and lead actor Shady Srour (star of Palm Springs International ShortFest prize-winner Ave Maria) takes a page from compatriot director Elia Suleiman’s Divine Intervention absurdist playbook in this likeable, low-key, poker-faced comedy boasting a distinct visual style.
