film synopsis

Both a gripping account of the current state of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and lesson in the country’s history, photojournalist-turned-director Daniel McCabe’s documentary combines unfiltered footage of conflict with the day-to-day activities of regular Congolese people surviving in an unforgiving and perpetual warzone. This immersive and raw investigation into life in the region presents the experiences of four very different people: a former rebel and present high-ranking National Army Colonel and whistleblower; a young, patriotic, soft-spoken and inspiring soldier rising within the ranks; a resilient black market minerals dealer; and an older tailor living in a displaced persons camp. Their realities are distinct from each other but they are all key to understanding the country’s little talked about cycle of war. In the end, to paraphrase Colonel Kasongo, the Whistleblower: it’s not enough to know what the Congo is… but why it is that way as well.
