film synopsis

"Guaranteed to be one of the major crowd pleasers of this or any other festival which includes it, Strictly Ballroom is a terrifically entertaining comic/love story set in a somewhat surreal world of ballroom dancing competitions. Leading man Scott Hastings is a dashing - but somewhat unorthodox - ballroom dancer who's been training since he was six under the watchful eye of his hilariously overbearing mother (once a champion dancer herself) and her former partner, now the corrupt kingpin of the Dance Federation Championships for which Scott is aiming. His waspish partner, Liz, deserts Scott in the preliminaries when he breaks Federation rules with a dazzling but improvisational performance on the dance floor. Forced to accept the tyro, plain-Jane Fran as his new partner, Scott at first despairs; but fate holds a sweet surprise in store for both Scott and his unexpectedly graceful new partner. Dazzling dance routines, a visual wit beyond compare and a singular sensibility that settles just this side of outright camp, Strictly Ballroom is strictly sensational." -PSIFF 1993
