film synopsis

Warmly embraced by the middle-class family she cares for, yet keenly aware that she will always be an outsider in their home, live-in domestic servant Cleo (an unforgettable performance from newcomer Yalitza Aparicio) quietly makes the best of the few options available to indigenous women in early-1970s Mexico City. While Cleo's calming presence gives comfort to the family's four children, their parents' disintegrating marriage suddenly ends in single parenthood for mother Sofía, and Cleo's own afternoons spent with troubled, immature lover Fermín lead to unexpected consequences. Soon the two women are pushed into increasingly desperate emotional terrain as the city explodes in social upheaval in this stirring modern masterpiece - a lyrical and absorbing year in the life of a woman, a family, and a nation from writer/director Alfonso Cuarón, winner of the Golden Lion at this year's Venice International Film Festival.

In competition for the CV Cine and FIPRESCI Awards.
