One of the first films to confront Germany’s role in the Holocaust. A Jewish teacher and a German sergeant fall in love at a Bulgarian concentration camp in 1943.

film synopsis

One of the first films to confront Germany’s role in the Holocaust, Stars centers on a Jewish teacher and a German sergeant who fall in love at a Bulgarian concentration camp where Greek Jews await their deportation to Auschwitz in 1943. But their love is crushed by fascism, hate, and discrimination. This newly restored 4K version screened in the 2025 Cannes Classics, marking a triumphant return to the venue where it nabbed a special jury prize in 1959. Based on the experiences of Bulgarian author and screenwriter Angel Wagenstein (1922–2023) and directed by the eminent Russia-trained German helmer Konrad Wolf (1925–1982).
