Seventeen-year-old cross-country runner Ku Stevens embarks on his most personal race yet as he retraces his grandfather’s 50-mile escape route from the Indian boarding school that held him captive.

film synopsis

Director Paige Bethmann’s stirring coming-of-age chronicle tracks the journey of 17-year-old high school athlete Ku Stevens, the only cross-country runner on the Yerington Paiute reservation. Logging hard-fought races at statewide competitions, his every step evokes the ancestral sagebrush of home. As his path toward an elite intercollegiate future reveals itself to be a simultaneous voyage into the past, Ku endows new meaning to the phrase “personal record” as he embarks upon a 50-mile commemorative run to retrace his grandfather’s escape route from an Indian boarding school. This powerful anthem of long-distance legacy and generational healing won the Audience Award at SXSW.
