In director Joonho Park’s tender story of self-discovery, gay North Korean defector Cheol-jun begins a new life in Seoul, but struggles to balance the external expectations of his dual identity.

film synopsis

Starting over in a new city requires an ability to code-switch and translate local customs, skills that elude soft-spoken North Korean defector Cheol-jun (an achingly vulnerable Youhyun Cho) when he arrives in Seoul in pursuit of a freer future. Torn between the expectations of his conservative study group of expats and the local gay community he’s quickly adopted into, Cheol-jun must navigate another border to reconcile an identity of his own definition. This breathtaking story of self-discovery announces a major filmmaking talent in writer/director Joonho Park, unlocking his inscrutable protagonist’s inner life with an astute framing of images and astounding tenderness.
