In competition for the FIPRESCI Prize.

film synopsis

Trapped in a dying Russian industrial town, Ada (Milana Aguzarova) is in a perpetual state of unease. At war with her family and her body, she oscillates between a profound desire for freedom and a fear of what it might mean to leave her claustrophobic, but familiar home. Kaur, her oppressive father, exerts an extreme level of control, trying to keep her in a simulated state of prepubescence after an injury further isolates her from the outside world. Though Ada has complicated feelings about leaving her family behind, she is resolute in her commitment, constantly on the lookout for an opportunity to break free. When her older brother, Akim, returns home for a visit, Ada insists that he help her escape. Director Kira Kovalenko’s sophomore film is a defiant critique of a patriarchal culture populated by weak men and their brutal efforts to maintain dominance.
