film synopsis
In this taut and provocative social drama, Naina (Konkona Sen Sharma) is a criminology professor whose life is shattered after a sexual assault that leaves her hospitalized and another woman dead. While navigating the psychological fallout of the attack, and attempting to reconnect with her husband with whom she has been trying – and failing – to conceive a child, Naina begins to question how a human can evolve into a monster capable of such heinous acts. Her obsession leads her down a dark and unpredictable path, leading her eventually to face her attacker in prison where he awaits the death penalty. Master filmmaker Aparna Sen (Ek Je Chhilo Raja PSIFF 2019) approaches such thorny and emotionally complex subject matter with a clear-eyed sensitivity and care, offering a rich and powerful experience that manages to feel both epic and intimate.
