film synopsis
Outside Djibouti City in the Horn of Africa live Guled, his wife Nasra and their son Mahad. Despite Nasra’s best efforts to conceal her worsening health condition and enjoy the time she has left with her family, Guled can’t ignore her pain. But even though he constantly faces death at his job as a gravedigger, Guled isn’t ready to confront the mortality of someone so near and dear to him. Unable to afford the kidney transplant she desperately needs, Guled must resort to the one solution they had agreed to avoid. In his feature debut, Somali-Finnish director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed crafts a beautiful tale of unconditional love caught in a dire situation, while subtly casting a light on the effects of post-colonialism. Somalia's first-ever entry for the Best International Oscar® is brought to vibrant life by the captivating performances from its charismatic cast of nonprofessional actors.
