film synopsis
New filmmaking talent Laura Samani turns her striking period drama about a grieving young mother into a tale of women's empowerment, gender fluidity and the possibility of miracles. Beginning in 1900 on an island in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, a place with its own specific set of beliefs and rites, we travel with Agata and her stillborn child as she seeks a distant Catholic sanctuary in the mountains, where it is said that such babies can be brought back to life for one short breath, just long enough for them to be baptized. On the road, detached from her community and any source of support, Agata falls in with the feral Lynx, another solo traveler, whose help comes with a price. Boasting remarkable cinematography and a soundtrack that privileges the sounds of nature, the film is spoken entirely in the dialect of the region.
