film synopsis

Matching an epic scope with intimate emotion, legendary auteur Zhang Yimou (Shadow PSIFF 2019) returns his eye to China’s history with this elegant and delightful charmer. Zhang Yi stars as a recent prison escapee in 1975 on the hunt for a newsreel that might feature the daughter he hasn't seen since imprisonment. But when the footage is snatched by the orphaned Liu (Liu Haocun), the nameless protagonist gives chase, to rescue and return the film to a pompous projectionist known as Mr. Movie (Fan Wei). Captured with gorgeous visual flair by cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding, Yimou explores themes of national history with his trademark grand sense of scale and, in one of the film’s most dazzling sequences that finds the townsfolk banding together to restore a film print warped by the elements, illustrates the rapturous power of cinema that brings us together.
