film synopsis
It’s 2013 and the primary focus of 15-year-old Ukrainian gymnast Olga (Nastya Budiashkina, making an astounding debut) is to compete in the upcoming European Championships as a prelude to making the Olympic team. But when her investigative journalist mother’s work puts their lives in danger, Olga is sent abroad to Switzerland. Suddenly finding herself navigating an unfamiliar country, Olga struggles to keep up with the rapidly evolving political situation back home while maintaining her intense training regimen. Director Elie Grappe’s impressive debut feature is at once a character study, a sports drama, a portrait of a difficult mother-daughter relationship and a record of living through political upheaval. And just like the characters who execute their gymnastic routines with aplomb, Olga expertly pivots between the personal, political and athletic without ever sacrificing momentum.
