film synopsis
Herra is adrift. A student living in Prague, she feels disconnected from her family and is uninterested in her peers. When she meets Nazir, she quickly agrees to marry him and begin their life in his native city of Kabul. Initially, there is a gulf between her expectations and reality, but over time she develops a respect for, and love of, the place, something that her American colleagues struggle to accept. When they adopt a young son, she finds solace in his mature and compassionate approach to a life steeped in adversity. What results is a deeply nuanced depiction of the varied attitudes Afghans assert around family, patriarchy and the political state of the country. Based on the novel Frišta by journalist Petra Procházková, My Sunny Maad is a lavishly illustrated exploration of one woman’s commitment to honoring the humanity that exists in those around her.
