film synopsis
In the middle of a sleepless night and without warning, it struck: a loud, violent thud, heard only by botanist Jessica Holland (Tilda Swinton) – a haunting sound that quickly overtakes her life. With the noise appearing more frequently and at random moments, Jessica enlists sound engineer Hernan to duplicate the mysterious thud in a recording studio. But even with an audio approximation, the sound persists and the question remains: is she losing her mind? Or could it be something else? As Jessica falls more out of sync with the world, she travels to the Colombian rainforests in search of the unknowable, forming a deeper understanding of permanence of sound and perhaps an unexpected answer to her mystery. A sensuously intriguing meditation on time, space and memory from modern master of global cinema Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Memoria is Colombia’s entry for the International Oscar®.
