film synopsis
The crude and the sophisticated interlace in this modern-day Cinderella story set in the behind-the-scenes world of high fashion. Esther (Nathalie Baye) is on the precipice of retirement as Head Seamstress at Dior Avenue Montaigne workshop when her handbag is snatched in a subway tunnel. The culprit is Jade (Lyna Khoudri), an aimless 20-year-old who lives in a cramped apartment with her ailing mother, and spends much of her time robbing affluent strangers in the city. Struck with a bout of guilt, Jade returns the belongings. But rather than turn her in to the police, Esther takes the petty thief under her wing as her dressmaking protégé. Director Sylvie Ohayon’s second feature is a poignant exploration of an unlikely bond between two women who come from vastly different worlds, but who have their own reasons for seeking each other’s company and guidance. The tactile intricacies of the workroom are captured in obsessive detail, making this dramatic confection catnip for fashion lovers.
