film synopsis
Current world events lend additional resonance to this compelling animated documentary about a man’s need to confront his past in order to have a future. Afghan-born Amin arrived in Denmark as an unaccompanied minor. Now, at 36, he is a successful academic and will soon marry his long-time boyfriend. But a secret that he has been hiding for over 20 years threatens to ruin the life he has built for himself. As he shares his story with his close friend Jonas Poher Rasmussen, the film’s director, animation proves the ideal medium to both mask and reveal this gay man who reinvented himself. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for World Documentary at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Flee is one of several extraordinary animated films for adults screening in this year’s festival lineup, including The Crossing, a powerful work about the rewards of perseverance and unbreakable family bonds.
