film synopsis
Souraya (Nadine Labaki) and her husband Walid (Saleh Bakri) left Beirut a long time ago to escape social unrest and increasing pollution. But the quiet and peaceful life they share with their daughters and Walid’s mother is disrupted when the government begins building an allegedly “ecological” landfill on the neighboring land. Set in the picturesque Lebanese mountains, their lifestyle is at first sight undeniably idyllic, but the intrusion of the outside world quickly reveals the cracks in their utopia. For her feature debut, Palm Springs International ShortFest alum Mounia Akl crafts a heartfelt and potent narrative around themes of environmental crisis and political corruption. The incredibly nuanced screenplay is a powerful metaphor for the current situation in Lebanon, while also reflecting different facets of Lebanese society. Carried by the stellar performances of the cast, the sharpness and wit of the characters make their evolving family dynamic all the more compelling.
