film synopsis
After a private sex tape she made with her husband goes viral, Emi (a brilliantly caustic Katia Pascariu) finds herself in scalding hot water. But even with her role and status as a history teacher at a leading Romanian secondary school in jeopardy, and the parents of her students calling for her head on a platter, Emi refuses to back down. As pandemonium reaches fever pitch, Emi faces a parents’ tribunal in which the line between morality and obscenity begins to smudge in increasingly outrageous and irreverent ways. Sure to raise eyebrows as much as elicit stomach-rippling guffaws, the latest from rascally Romanian auteur Radu Jude (I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians PSIFF 2019) is a howlingly funny social comedy of errors and a biting takedown of the hypocrisy surrounding what society deems obscene. Winner of the top prize at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, Jude’s certifiably bonkers triptych is now Romania’s ballsy submission for the International Oscar®.
