film synopsis
When his brother Claudio accidently falls to his death while working on a luxury mansion, fellow laborer Francisco’s already bare-bones existence among Mexico City’s struggling working class takes an unexpected and devastating hit. With little time to process his brother’s passing before having to return to work, and now with a pregnant sister-in-law to look after, the construction worker seeks out what little recompense is available through his employer’s insurance. But the greedy and uncaring operation refuses to pay out, blaming Claudio for his own death, backing an already weary Francisco into a desperate and dangerous corner. With the money gone and nowhere left to turn, Francisco seizes an opportunity to live the kind of life long denied him. Soon, the sweet taste of how the other half lives proves to be an intoxicating mix for the worker, blurring the lines between exploiters and the exploited, and building to a devastating climax in this stunning, slow-burn debut feature from writer/director David Zonana.
