Feeling undervalued at work and at home, Ling finds solace in a deep bond she develops with one of her students. But facing the consequences is inevitable in this complex portrait of a woman in crisis from director Anthony Chen (Ilo Ilo, PSIFF 2014).

film synopsis

Writer/director Anthony Chen (Ilo Ilo, PSIFF 2014) casts a sensitive light on a woman who has tried for years to become a mother and now finds herself on the verge of a crisis. Ling (Yann Yann Yeo) longs for the tenderness she once shared with her husband who has recently become indifferent to her. While caring for her father-in-law, Ling treats him as a substitute for the child she desperately wants. Although a dedicated teacher, the Chinese language classes she teaches are undervalued, and it’s only Wei Lun, one of her remedial students, who shows interest. Similarly lonely and neglected at home, Wei finds in Ling an understanding, and soon he develops a crush, which Ling gradually reciprocates. While trying to navigate this growing intimacy, Ling must embark on a journey to rediscover herself and come to terms with the consequences of a forbidden romance between a high school teacher and her student.
