2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
Capturing the paranoia and optimism of small-town America during the Cold War, Andrew Patterson’s remarkable film is a technical and storytelling marvel that inspires a true sense of wonder about our place in the universe. With his pair of Buddy Holly specs, the fast-talking Everett (Jake Horowitz) takes pleasure in being the analog guru for all tech troubles on the night of his high school’s big basketball game. Before he can split for his gig at the local radio station, Everett agrees to walk the goody-goody Fay (Sierra McCormick) to her job at the town’s telephone switchboard. When a mysterious frequency interrupts Fay’s calls, the two begin to suspect something more ominous (maybe even Russian) is at play. Steeped in nostalgia, hair-raising sound design, fantastic direction and an infectious chemistry between Patterson’s leads, The Vast of Night is an utterly one-of-a-kind night at the movies.
