film synopsis
What appears to be an idyllic childhood for 14-year-old Mulla on the picturesque, serene Lakshadweep Island is in actuality the tumultuous life of a mistreated orphan. Fed up and with only a telephone number to depend on, Mulla sets off in search of his elder brother — or moothon — Akbar, who left for Mumbai years earlier under mysterious circumstances. Upon leaving his beautiful island, Mulla finds himself immediately thrown into the seedy, chaotic and ruthless underbelly of Mumbai amid a world of gangsters, sex workers and child traffickers. Undeterred by obstacles, Mulla’s love and longing for his brother propel him forward. Actor-turned-writer/director Geetu Mohandas’s daring and emotional second feature is an unpredictable, unconventional adventure story, one that confronts questions about sexual identity and orientation often met with intolerance and violence in ways both sensitive and authentic.
