film synopsis
Once a dark-eyed muse to artists such as Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon and Salvador Dalí, Benedetta Barzini quickly evolved from 1960s-era Italian supermodel into an incisive, outspoken critic of the fashion industry’s inherent misogyny. Now in her 70s and as lively, sharp and cheeky as ever, she announces her desire to retreat from public life forever. This inspires her son, director Beniamino Barrse, to begin a dogged pursuit to preserve her legacy on camera, his instrument of choice and the very object she wishes to escape. Alternately railing against her son’s invasive techniques and acquiescing to his wish to capture and celebrate her life, Barrese’s debut feature illustrates their tumultuous relationship. In his endeavor to bottle his mother’s essence despite her reluctance to comply, Barrese has fashioned a combative, combustible and compassionate portrait of a remarkable woman who ruptured stereotypes and now seeks total freedom.
