film synopsis
From the director of the audience favorite Rams (PSIFF 2016) comes this unconventional small-town David vs. Goliath tale. After the death of her dairy farmer husband, middle-aged widow Inga takes on the corrupt local co-op whose unfair policies hold the residents of her community hostage. Launching a social media campaign to bring attention to the co-op’s exploitive practices, Inga finds new inner resolve, but her quest also makes her the target of a ruthless adversary. Writer/director Grímur Hákonarson continues to probe a deeply rooted rural culture closely connected to his country’s national spirit while also championing traditional values over the exploitive underside of global capitalism. The yin to male-dominated Rams’s yang, The County is full of feisty female energy and imagery, and sprinkled with rousing “You go, girl!” comic moments. Ace Estonian cameraman Mart Taniel (November) lovingly captures the unique landscape, the compliant cows, and some very charismatic Icelandic sheep dogs.
