film synopsis
This seductive tale of art world treachery and murderous motives transports us to the glamorous shores of Lake Como where a charming, ambitious and amoral art critic (The Square’s Claes Bang) and his mysterious, newly acquired American girlfriend (Elizabeth Debicki) are summoned to the estate of a wealthy art collector Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger). The nefarious Cassidy blackmails the critic into a scheme to steal a painting by the legendary, reclusive artist Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland), who hasn’t shown his work or granted an interview in decades. So begins this twist-filled neo-noir based on Charles Willeford’s classic novel (transposing its Florida setting to Italy). Bang and Debicki, exuding sizzling erotic chemistry, are wonderful together in a tale whose wittily sophisticated surface cracks open to reveal its darker underbelly. Adding to the decadent pleasures are Sutherland’s sly turn as the courtly Debney, and Jagger vamping it up as the avaricious tycoon.
