film synopsis
Eager to create a better life for themselves and their soon-to-be first child, young indigenous couple Leo (Lucio Rojas) and Georgina (Pamela Mendoza Arpi) leave their Quechua community for the bustle of 1980s Lima at a time of intense social upheaval. When Georgina hears an ad for a pregnancy clinic offering free care, she gladly accepts what little help is made available. But when her newborn daughter is kidnapped from the delivery room, the “clinic” quickly becomes an empty storefront. After local authorities turn a blind eye, Georgina’s only chance at recovering her child is enlisting the help of local journalist (Tommy Párraga). Soon the pair uncovers a terrifying child abduction ring and a web of corruption that goes straight to the upper echelons of power. This visually stunning and assured debut from writer/director Melina León is inspired by and dedicated to her journalist father whose fearless reporting helped uncover a massive child smuggling operation in the early 1980s.
