film synopsis
After dreaming her entire life to leave the confines of Earth’s — and life’s — gravitational pull, Sarah (Eva Green) suddenly struggles to accept her next mission as a year-long resident of the International Space Station. Now a single mother, Sarah is guilt-ridden about leaving her fragile 8-year-old daughter behind during a formative year in her life. It doesn’t help that NASA poster boy Mike (Matt Dillon) takes every opportunity to make a sexist barb in response to Sarah’s inability to handle the emotionally and physically draining training regime. As the countdown to liftoff approaches, the composed Sarah begins to make rash decisions that threaten her chance to ever make it out of this world. Co-writer of the internationally acclaimed Mustang (PSIFF 2016), director Alice Winocour’s gripping drama frighteningly captures the intensity of each individual test Sarah undergoes, while exploring the larger experience of an inspiring woman who must navigate two seemingly impossible duties.
