film synopsis
On his first day on the job, Street Crime Unit officer Stéphane (Damien Bonnard) is taken on a tour of Les Bosquets, the neglected neighborhood in Paris’s Montfermeil suburb torn apart by riots in 2005, and given a crash course in police tactics by his new colleagues. When a drone camera records an arrest gone violently wrong, Ruiz must choose between his conscience and covering for his fellow officers as the race against local community leaders to intercept the footage ensues, and tensions in Les Bosquets threaten to explode once more. Filmmaker Ladj Ly has crafted both a gritty thriller and a complex, detailed portrait of the region of Montfermeil of which Ly is a native, and where Victor Hugo’s classic novel is partially set. Explosive and urgent, Ly’s gripping debut narrative feature won a Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
