Based on real-life Mumbai hip-hop artists Naezy and Divine, whose poetry cleverly deconstructs corruption, colonization, poverty and police brutality with a striking realism, Gully Boy is an engaging look at the Indian rap scene. Murad “Gully Boy” Ahmed (Ranveer Singh) works a mindless and low-paying job at his uncle’s factory despite having a hard-earned education. When his father brings home a second bride and leaves his wife displaced, Murad reaches a breaking point. Murad discovers and decides to pursue hip-hop, which becomes not only an escape, but a chance to one day make it big and flee the slums of Dharavi with Safeena (Alia Bhatt), the woman he loves.
