film synopsis
Responding to a wave of anti-LGBT legislation, the members of The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus decide to embark on a concert tour of the South to spread a message of tolerance where it may not be welcome. For many members, it is a deeply personal journey. Artistic Director Dr. Tim Seelig had been a Baptist minister in Texas, and a married man with two children. When he came out at 35, the church did everything they could to destroy his life. In Mississippi, Jimmy White wonders if the homophobic father he hasn’t seen in years will show up at their concert, leading to one of many surprises in this poignant and inspiring documentary. But it’s not just the locals who are asked to look into their hearts: the journey challenges the chorus members to examine their own preconceptions and stereotypes about the South. This stirring, eye-opening musical odyssey is a balm in a troubled, divisive time.
