2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
In this accomplished feature debut from writer/director Sanja Zivkovic, Easy Land follows two Serbian refugees, mother Jasna (Mirjana Jokovic) and daughter Nina (Nina Kiri), as they navigate the challenges of adapting to their new home in Toronto. Though Jasna feels defeated when her architecture credentials aren’t recognized in Canada, a design project presents an opportunity that may land her a new job. While she obsesses over this possibility, Nina unenthusiastically attends high school, where she sells illegal cellphones on the sly in the hopes of earning enough money to return to her boyfriend in Serbia. It isn’t long before all promise of stability dissipates, and past obstacles return to haunt them. Compelled by an examination of minor moments, Easy Land’s tension builds carefully and precisely, aided by the considerable skill and innate chemistry of its two lead actors.
