film synopsis
Director Semih Kaplanoğlu (Honey, PSIFF 2011) returns with this tense family drama centered on two different perspectives on motherhood. Exploring the dynamics between two women with very little in common — the wealthy, career-driven Asli and her babysitter Gülnihal, herself a young mother — Kaplanoğlu tells his story from the judgment-free point of view of the one person that connects them: Asli’s newborn, Zeynep. As Asli attempts to reconcile her work and ambitions with her role as a mother, the undeniable deepening of the Gülnihal and Zeynep’s bond triggers Asli's jealousy. Slowly and subtly, with very little dialogue, the pressure in Asli’s bright modern apartment mounts, forcing her to face her own insecurities before the unexpected climax. Commitment is Turkey's arresting entry for the Best International Feature Oscar®.
