2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
The struggles and triumphs of three courageous transgender high school athletes are at the heart of this stirring and thought-provoking documentary. There’s 17-year-old Mack, born Mackenzie, a state championship wrestler forced to compete, by Texas rules, against girls, though his wish is to compete against boys. His victories are accompanied by jeers and hate mail. In Connecticut, where she is free to compete in the gender of her choice, track star Andraya runs for a school that’s warmly supportive, but it doesn’t stop the vitriol of angry parents. In New Hampshire, where we meet skier/activist Sarah, a black athlete adopted by white parents, the rules insist that surgery must be complete before she can compete as a girl. Changing the Game pays tribute to the grit and guts of these remarkable kids, while forcing us to ponder the complex issues that it artfully raises.
