2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
In this impressive career-propelling feature debut, Mati Diop skillfully traverses disparate themes and genres – including politics, horror and romance – to construct a hypnotic fever dream. In the suburbs of Dakar, Ada and Souleiman are in love, but their relationship is doomed. Ada is promised to another man. As the impending marriage fast approaches, Souleiman, along with other fellow construction workers yet to be paid for work on a futuristic tower, decide to leave Senegal by boat overnight. The young women left behind are heartbroken, but soon, strange, inexplicable events begin to occur around Ada, and she becomes increasingly haunted by fantasies that Souleiman is still present. Named one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch for 2020,” Mati Diop premiered Atlantics at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival where it was awarded the Grand Prix, and is the Senegalese entry for the Best International Feature Oscar®.
