film synopsis
With his unruly mane of curly, coal-black hair, mascara-caked eyes, stylishly ragged clothes and thick beard, musician Ara Malikian looks every inch the raging punk rocker instead of the classically trained violinist he is. From his birth to an Armenian family in Lebanon to his formative years as a teen prodigy studying at Germany’s prestigious Hanover University, where he performed in bars and busked on the streets for change, Malikian’s salvation was and remains the violin. Now credited with over 25 albums, sold-out world tours that combine the spectacle of symphony with the intensity of the most impassioned rock show, Malikian is a genre-melding iconoclast who manages to find joy and renewal in his beloved instrument, and in the messiness that is being human, in this lively and kinetic debut from director Nata Moreno.
