2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
Born into Barcelona’s working poor and surviving through a series of low-wage, low-skilled, dead-end jobs, 22-year-old Sara (Greta Fernández) wants nothing more than to raise her infant son Joel, get her kid brother Martin out of foster care, and to never again be alone in a world that expects her to fail. When she finally lands a steady job in an industrial kitchen, and her case to gain custody of Martin moves forward, Sara discovers her troubled father Manuel (Eduard Fernández) has been released from prison and is seeking a reunion with his estranged children. Soon Sara’s new and fragile sense of normalcy is tested by Manuel’s toxic presence, a tentative connection to her flesh and blood quickly broken by his inevitable unreliability. Backed into a corner by a world that has never given her the benefit of the doubt, Sara must make a stand for the promise of a better future in this raw and riveting debut feature from director Belén Funes.
