When A-Ho is sent to juvenile detention for getting into a brawl, and his pregnant girlfriend shows up on their doorstep, his family is shattered and his father refuses to have anything to do with him in this arresting, unpredictable drama.

film synopsis

When A-Ho, the rebellious young son in a family of four, is sent to a juvenile detention center for getting into a brawl, his parents are shocked and ashamed, prompting his father A-Wen to turn his back on him. A-Wen instead devotes his attention to the elder son, A-Hao, who wants to be a doctor and is, in his father’s eyes, more worthy of support. But all is not what it seems. To make matters worse, A-Ho’s pregnant girlfriend shows up on the family’s doorstep while he’s imprisoned and begs to be taken in. In this complex psychological family drama that doubles as a thriller, director Chung Mong-Hong deals with loss, healing, depression and redemption, and finds a resolution in an unforeseen, unexpected twist. When elucidating the meaning behind the film’s title, the award-winning director said, “The sun is warm but it can also be too hot, so in the end everyone tries to hide in the shadows.”
